My second large crochet project for 2026 is to turn the skeins of this thrifted lot of yarn into a throw. I chose Anastacia Zittel's Ocean Tranquility pattern for the throw because it's easy but interesting enough not to be mindless, and it works up fast and beautiful.
The colors remind me of iris flowers, so that's where I got the name for it.
The first job is to do the math and tweak the pattern. I want the stripes in this throw to be the same size, so that means using equal amounts of yarn from each skein. The largest size throw from the pattern (there are 3 sizes) is 95 rows, and I have 11 skeins of yarn, so I'm going to add four rows so I can make nine rows per skein (I may add another nine rows to that if I decide I want the end band colors to match.) I then arranged the skeins by the colors as to how I want to use them, and took a reference snapshot.
I've made this pattern twice before, so getting started went quickly. I began with the Lion Brand Pound of Love in Thistle because it appeals to me, and I've only worked with this yarn a few times. I do want to add a little commentary about the yarn as I work through the skeins.
This Pound of Love yarn is very soft, and I do like the color. It had a tactile weight to it that made me wonder if they treated it with an additive to make it soft; the hand reminded me of clothes that have been soaked in Downey before drying. That's not unpleasant for me, but your mileage may vary. I did get a few partial splits and one knot, but it's rare not to find those in any yarn brand these days.
It took me one session to make ten rows, and I'm very pleased with how the throw started out.
