One Night Stand

I've gottten very busy with my crochet projects, of which I'm working on two at the same time. I'm also taking little breaks from them to try out other ideas, so I can have three things going at once on any given night. This project here is a throw I'm making for our postal carrier in Anastacia Zittel's Flowerpot afghan pattern (which is amazing) using We Heart Yarn acrylic from Hobbii (ditto), and I'm keeping track of my progress on this lovely row counter my friend B gave me for Easter.

I decided to try a small dishcloth project with thrifted cotton yarn from my stash. I've heard some influencers in videos talk about how hard cotton is to crochet compared to acrylic and wool, but I don't remember it being all that difficult to work with (disclaimer: I very, very rarely use cotton yarns.)

I don't like following along with the opinions of others blindly, so sometimes I just test out things to find out if I agree.

When it comes to washing dishes I'm more of a sponge person, but I can use this with my face wash in the shower. I like the colors in this skein.

While I was working on the throw and the face cloth I was also looking the the catalogue that Herrschners sent me in the snail mail. I don't need anything but it's yarn! Ha. They are having some good sales on cotton. Must resist the mystery mill ends.

That said, even on sale cotton yarn is pretty pricey these days. I guess that's because of the crochet boom in general and also garment and amigurumi making, which typically call for cotton.

I make amigurumi from acrylic yarn, and I only make wearables for winter out of the same. It's just too hot here any other time to wear crocheted garments.

My finished dishcloth. The foundation row was too loose (I didn't use the proper tension while I was adjusting to the feel of working with it) but otherwise it came out fine. Cotton yarn doesn't stretch at all, which may be the problem the influencers are having. It didn't hurt my hands, and I really had no problem with it other than it making me crochet slower than other types of yarn because of the texture and lack of stretch.

I might make a few mats out of cotton yarn. They'd work nicely as water absorbers for the dogs' bowls.

Finally I got started on the crochet portion of my April tote for my calendar project. I ended up having to tweak the pattern a lot because it won't work as written in the round with cutter quilt pieces. No problem, I adjust patterns all the time. This orange yarn is wool so that was altogether a different texture, too -- a bit stiff and also not particularly stretchy compared to acrylic.
