Last Month in Crochet

While I'm off taking back my calm, let me show you what I got done last month.

April was all about experimenting for me. I didn't use a lot of skeins, but I had fun with yarn this month, which is just as important. I made a dishcloth out of cotton yarn to test whether or not I agreed with the opinions of some influencers about it (end result: I don't agree. For me, cotton yarn is fine.)

I also made a dog bowl mat for my pups out of cotton yarn, just to be sure I liked it.

I tested out a skein of sport weight silk yarn by making a granny square out of it, which I may incorporate into my calendar project next month.

Speaking of that, I finished the April tote for my quilting calendar project, which I'm showing here on the crochet blog because it's a fusion of crochet and quilting. The yarn I used to crochet the tote tops and handles is a worsted art yarn I thrifted last year.

While investigating a mystery ball of yarn I turned it into a giant granny square.

I made a scarf while trying a crocheted afghan pattern for the first time.

I crocheted a little pocket holder out of silk yarn for the hand cream I carry in my purse.

To test how sport weight silk yarn behaves in the round I made a little mug rug for my office desk, and finished off the cake with another granny square.

From the remains of that skein I was using to swatch patterns I freehanded a little no-pattern clutch for my art supplies so I can take them with me on road trips this summer.

I made a miniature version of 1dogwoof's Classic Crochet Bunny.

I made a little basket and three pompoms out of a single skein of Red Heart Super Saver Pink Camo yarn.

I made a loaf cat out of Dollar Tree chenille yarn.

I crocheted another big granny square while testing Red Heart Crafties yarn.

I also crocheted a very weird-looking mini teddy bear out of Just Yarn Teddy, which is one of the worst yarns I've ever tried.

I crocheted a wrap so I could review some Chinese gradient yarn a friend sent me.

I finished spring cleaning with the final task of getting my yarn stash out of bins and into bookshelves and hanging organizers in our front room (it still needs some color sorting, but it's all in one spot now.)

Finally, I got started on my throw with the Sweet Roll yarn I thrifted, which has turned out to be a joy to work on.

I used 21 skeins of yarn in April, plus I donated another twenty skeins to our local church thrift store on donation day, bringing the total to 41 skeins. The total number of skeins I've used and donated for 2026 is 142.75.

Eight Plus Numbers

When I was looking up the retail on the small lot of yarn plus a tapestry kit I got a lot of surprises. This Red Heart Roll with It Sparkle skein in "Diamonds" was actually a cake that sells $10.99 on Yarnspirations. The lot included two Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo skeins, which retail for $8.99 each, and stuck in the center of the buff color I found a 5.5 mm crochet hook. This is a skein of 100% Icelandic wool, which can be really expensive. It's marked with a price tag of $7.00, and I found it selling for $8.00 online. The needlepoint kit is the biggest surprise of all. It makes a pillow, and hails from the UK, where it sells for £45.00 ($60.76 US). Since it's flamingos I definitely have to finish it if I can. Altogether my eight plus lot retails for $125.04; I paid $21.30 total for the lot with the buy-it-now option and one penny shipping. I indeed got a very nice bargain.

Bucket List

This year I'll turn 65, so I am starting to put together a crochet bucket list. It's not because I think I'll be kicking the bucket any time soon, but while I'm still around there are some projects I'd like to make. It's also fun to compile a list of dream projects. This crochet version of a double wedding ring quilt definitely tops my list. I have a nice little collection of these quilts, and it would be fun to crochet one. When I first saw the Aura Mosaic Crochet Blanket I knew I wanted to make it. It's not that I dislike all the brightly colored Persian tile type projects, I just gravitate more toward earthy and nature-inspired palettes. This one is simply stunning. I'd really like to crochet a light and lacy duster like this one from Red Heart to wear. Mine would likely end up being a mossy shade of green or off-white. Speaking of mossy greens, this Mirrored Leaves throw was on the cover of the catalog that Herrschners sent wit...

On the Beach

Last week my guy and I went to walk Daytona Beach, which was mostly (and eerily) deserted. This is what our beaches used to look like when I was a kid. It was a beautiful day, cold and breezy but calm. It feels like 2026 is getting off to the right start.
