After buying four storage containers from IKEA that were less than $10.00, I folded them out (they're very simple to turn into boxes) and tested them to see how many skeins of yarn they would hold.
I fit 14 skeins of new yarn in the Barndrom ($9.99) but I could have squeezed about twice that in it. I just wanted to put the yarn for some pending projects in it so I can have it out in my sewing room. This sturdy box is perfect to leave out because it's very pretty; it would also make an awesome gift box for yarn, crochet blankets or other items for your crocheter or knitter pals.
I used the Slatterval ($4.99) for my collection of chenille yarns, and fit all 21 skeins in it with room to spare. The basket I had them in was overflowing, so this is nice.
The Drona (also $4.99) was perfect for yarn I've sorted out for some fall projects -- it held 32 skeins with no problem.
The real surprise was the Skubb ($9.99), which was super roomy and held 41 skeins of oddball yarn I've thrifted. I could have fit another ten or fifteen skeins in it, too. I think this would be a great solution for makers with limited space for their stash; also once you unzip the top you can see everything in it at once.
Altogether my IKEA storage containers held 108 skeins of yarn, and could have held more. For $29.96 that's not bad at all.
