Strategic Mystery Pack

After watching a Mary Maxim unboxing on Knotty by Maxine, I decided to wait for another decent sale or discounted shipping to try another pack, and to order some yarns I want for a project and to test. I wanted more of the Serenity Chunky Tweed, and from what Maxine got in her pack I thought I might get lucky again. When the site offered eighteen cent shipping I jumped on it and put in my order.

The order arrived, so let's see if I was right.

Whee! I loved unboxing yarns. :)

These are the yarns I ordered separately from the mystery pack. On the left is Premier Puzzle in Acrostic (great colorway name.) This is a 100% acrylic #5 bulky yarn with 328 yards/300m/7 oz./200 grams, so they're very large skeins. I've been wanting to try this yarn for a while now but every time I try to thrift it I'm outbid, so I figured I'd just order a couple of skeins.

On the right is a three pack of Serenity Chunky Tweed in Seaglass. Like the other Serenity skeins I received in my last surprise pack this is a 97% acrylic 3% viscose #5 bulky yarn with 109 yards/100m/3.5 oz./100 grams. I'm planning to use these for a project with the Aran and Carbon colorways I got last time.

Here's everything that came in my surprise pack this time: fifteen skeins, two crochet hooks and four paper patterns. I really got lucky with the yarn, too.

I got three of the Summer Nights in Castaway, which match the skein I got in the last pack (even the same lot number). This is an 82% acrylic 18% polyester super fine yarn, and now I have enough to make a decent size project.

I also got eight more skeins of Serenity Chunky Tweed; three in Aran, three in Carbon, and two in Mulberry. I was hoping to get more of the Mulberry and was completely surprised to see more of the white and black colorways. I definitely have enough of this yarn now to do two big projects.

, I got three more cakes of Comfy Cotton in Chai Latte, a 50% cotton 50% polyester #3 DK weight yarn with 392 yards/358 m/7 oz./200 grams. Added to the three I got in the last pack, that's enough for me to make a wearable, so I'm super excited about that.

I also received one skein of Mary Maxim Glimmer in Dusty Mauve. This is a 97% acrylic 3% other worsted weight yarn with 191 yards/175 m/3.5 oz./100 grams, and the other is likely a pretty strand of silver metallic thread wrapped around the yarn. Really pretty, and maybe enough for a hat.

I got the same four patterns and the same two crochet hooks again, but that didn't bother me at all -- I was hoping for repeats, and I can share them with a friend who wants to get into crochet.

With the basically free shipping I ended up paying about $2.90 per skein. A little more than what I usually pay for yarn when I thrift it, but this is brand new and exactly what I was hoping to get, so I'm completely satisfied.

Eight Plus Numbers

When I was looking up the retail on the small lot of yarn plus a tapestry kit I got a lot of surprises. This Red Heart Roll with It Sparkle skein in "Diamonds" was actually a cake that sells $10.99 on Yarnspirations. The lot included two Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo skeins, which retail for $8.99 each, and stuck in the center of the buff color I found a 5.5 mm crochet hook. This is a skein of 100% Icelandic wool, which can be really expensive. It's marked with a price tag of $7.00, and I found it selling for $8.00 online. The needlepoint kit is the biggest surprise of all. It makes a pillow, and hails from the UK, where it sells for £45.00 ($60.76 US). Since it's flamingos I definitely have to finish it if I can. Altogether my eight plus lot retails for $125.04; I paid $21.30 total for the lot with the buy-it-now option and one penny shipping. I indeed got a very nice bargain.

Bucket List

This year I'll turn 65, so I am starting to put together a crochet bucket list. It's not because I think I'll be kicking the bucket any time soon, but while I'm still around there are some projects I'd like to make. It's also fun to compile a list of dream projects. This crochet version of a double wedding ring quilt definitely tops my list. I have a nice little collection of these quilts, and it would be fun to crochet one. When I first saw the Aura Mosaic Crochet Blanket I knew I wanted to make it. It's not that I dislike all the brightly colored Persian tile type projects, I just gravitate more toward earthy and nature-inspired palettes. This one is simply stunning. I'd really like to crochet a light and lacy duster like this one from Red Heart to wear. Mine would likely end up being a mossy shade of green or off-white. Speaking of mossy greens, this Mirrored Leaves throw was on the cover of the catalog that Herrschners sent wit...

On the Beach

Last week my guy and I went to walk Daytona Beach, which was mostly (and eerily) deserted. This is what our beaches used to look like when I was a kid. It was a beautiful day, cold and breezy but calm. It feels like 2026 is getting off to the right start.
